Visitors to the Fitur international tourism exhibition in Madrid this week have seen plans for Murcia's new airport at Corvera.
When completed, the airport will significantly improve transport links to the Costa Blanca and is in a good location for people travelling to Torrevieja and Santa Pola especially.
Murcia's regional councillor for public works, housing and transport Jose Ballesteros held meetings with several major airlines at the fair to discuss providing services from the airport when it opens in 2010, Typically Spanish reports.
According to the website, these carriers included Ryanair, Vueling, Air France and Air Europa.
Mr Ballesteros is said to be hopeful that the new airport will provide lower tariffs and greater flexibility for passengers as it will be a privately-run project. The airport will open with an operating capacity of 1.5 million passengers.
Passenger levels at the nearby El Altet Airport in Alicante increased by three per cent last year, recent figures state.
