New airport to improve Seville transport links

A new international airport in Andalucia is set to make the southern Spanish region even more accessible for British holidaymakers and overseas homeowners.

The Spanish Ministry of Development has granted a private company permission to build the €150 million (£111.8 million) airport in Huelva, a short journey from the Andalucian capital Seville.

According to Homes Worldwide, the new hub should be operational by 2012 and will serve 1.5 million passengers during its first ten years. A number of low-cost airlines will be encouraged to fly to Huelva, further improving access to Seville and other nearby areas.

Recent figures from the Industrial, Tourism and Trade Ministry state that low-cost flight providers brought a total of 24 million passengers to Spain during 2007.

Andalucia is the second largest and most populous of Spain's 17 autonomous regions and is said to be birthplace of flamenco.
