Cost of living in Spain 'much cheaper than UK'

05 March 2008

A new survey by a Spanish property website has revealed that British people can make considerable savings on their everyday living expenses by moving to Spain.

The study by Kyero.com found that on average, couples living in Spain can exist on €644 (£494) a month, in addition to mortgage or rent payments and not including one-off costs such as TV and telephone installation.

Included in the 644 figure are expenses such as gas and electricity, council tax, insurance, telephone calls and groceries, with many property owners from the UK informing the website that the majority of day-to-day outgoings are considerably cheaper in Spain.

"Most things are two-thirds the cost of the UK," one Alicante resident told Kyero.

Another British homeowner living in Murcia added: "Average meal out in Spain for two with bottle of wine - under €25. In UK - in excess of €55."

Getting to Spain is also becoming cheaper for Brits, with many budget airlines offering more flights to the country. Low-cost carrier bmibaby announced new routes to Madrid and Barcelona from Manchester Airport last week.
