The Global Compact is a voluntary international initiative proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on 31 January 1999. It challenges companies, labour organisations, NGOs and other social actors to achieve corporate citizenship based on universal ethical values and ten international accepted principles (PDF).
Its principles are based on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption ideals from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Declaration of the World Trade Organisation and the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the Fight against Corruption.
Bancaja Habitat joined the UN Global Compact in May 2007 and since June 2007 it has formed part of the Spanish Association of the UN Global Compact. Forming part of this association has allowed the company to assume the commitment to implementing and developing the ten principles before its workforce, clients, suppliers and society in general and to publicly and periodically provide information about the measures that have been adopted and the goals that have been achieved.
