Visitors to Spain 'stay in holiday homes'

Many of the people taking holidays in Spain own property in the country, it has been revealed.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), about 500,000 people from the UK own a holiday home in a Spanish town or city.

This has led to many visitors to the country are choosing to stay in their property instead of booking lodgings in a hotel or other form of accommodation.

Speaking to the Scotsman, an ABTA spokesperson commented: "If they're not there, they are lending them to their friends and family."

He added that in terms of the number of people going, Spain is still the most popular country among British holidaymakers overall.

Foreign Currency Direct recently said the popularity of owning a foreign property has affected the take-up of traditional package holidays.

Figures from the firm and cited by Travel Weekly also showed that many people are choosing to take four or five short breaks throughout the year, rather than one long holiday in the summer.
