High speed train to connect Seville and Barcelona

Plans for a rapid new rail connection between Seville and Barcelona have been revealed by the Spanish development minister Magdalena Alvarez.

The new service will mean that train passengers will be able to travel from Andalucia to the Catalan capital without having to pass through the central AVE station in Madrid, cutting the journey time to about five hours, Typically Spanish reports.

Describing the new line as a "bypass", Ms Alvarez said that the project was still in its early stages and had not yet been given a definite timescale.

However, she also revealed more details of the new high speed service between Seville and Malaga, which is due to begin on February 20th.

Known as the 'lanzadera' line, the service will operate six trains a day and reduce the journey between the two cities to one hour and 55 minutes, with the train reaching speeds of up to 250 kph. A one-way trip will be priced at €17.30 (£12).

According to the European Rail Guide website, the AVE train network is responsible for improving Spanish transport links "by leaps and bounds".
