Costa del Sol to receive funding boost

Spain's most popular tourist region is to benefit from a major funding boost to further improve the experience for foreign visitors and property owners.

Approximately €100 million will be spent on the Costa del Sol over the next four years as part of the Spanish government's Qualifa plan, Typically Spanish reports.

Joan Clos, minister for industry, commerce and tourism, visited Malaga yesterday and announced the funding - which is about €20 million more than had been expected - after signing an agreement with regional councillor Sergio Moreno.

Mr Moreno said that the money would be spent on revitalising areas and boosting tourist facilities in eight towns on the western part of the Costa del Sol.

According to data recently released by the Industrial, Tourism and Trade Ministry, 59.2 million foreign visitors travelled to Spain at some point during 2007, representing the country's highest ever levels of tourism.
