Brits 'move abroad for retirement'

A growing number of UK people are looking to move overseas when they retire, according to the latest research.

Findings from a survey by pensions firm Scottish Widows show that 39 per cent of Britons would consider relocating abroad for their retirement, with 60 per cent of Londoners stating that they are 'likely' to head overseas when they have finished work.

The research found that people in higher tax brackets are particularly interested in moving to a foreign country such as Spain, with 63 per cent of those on substantial incomes confirming plans to leave the UK after their retirement.

A separate study from currency firm HiFX has also reported a growing interest in moving abroad among Brits - the company received 27 per cent more inquiries during 2007 than in the previous year, with Spain one the most popular locations.

HiFX director Mark Bodega commented: "A strong pound, rising house prices and good job opportunities abroad tend to be main reasons for Brits to emigrate."
